NADPH

Description

NADPH (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) is a coenzyme that plays an important role in many biochemical reactions in cells. It is a reduced form of NADP+, which stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate. NADPH is primarily involved in anabolic reactions, such as the biosynthesis of fatty acids, cholesterol, and nucleotides. It provides reducing power, in the form of electrons and hydrogen ions, for these reactions, which allows them to proceed. NADPH is also involved in a number of other cellular processes, including antioxidant defense, detoxification reactions, and the regeneration of glutathione, which is an important antioxidant molecule in cells. In addition, NADPH is required for the activity of various enzymes, such as cytochrome P450 monooxygenases and nitric oxide synthases, which are involved in the metabolism of drugs and other xenobiotics. NADPH is synthesized in cells by a number of enzymes, including glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malic enzyme. It is important to note that the ratio of NADPH to its oxidized form, NADP+, is tightly regulated in cells, as imbalances can lead to oxidative stress and cellular damage.
