(S)-propane-1,2-diol

Description

1,2-Propanediol is a metabolic intermediate associated with the catabolism and fermentation of deoxysugars in Escherichia coli [35]. It can serve as a growth substrate for specific mutant strains of Escherichia coli K-12 [35, 361]. The metabolism of this compound is facilitated by propanediol dehydrogenase, a ferrous-activated, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent enzyme encoded within the fucose operon [35].

The 1,2-propanediol metabolic pathway can be recruited in engineered microorganisms to enable the utilization of alternative carbon substrates. For example, E. coli mutants have been shown to grow on xylitol by incorporating enzymatic activities from the L-1,2-propanediol and D-xylose metabolic pathways [361].
