The HCBT gene, also referred to as anthranilate N-hydroxycinnamoyl/benzoyltransferase or hydroxycinnamoyl/benzoyl-CoA:anthranilate N-acyltransferase (Anthranilate N-benzoyltransferase protein 2), encodes a member of the BAHD acyltransferase family that catalyzes the conjugation of hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA esters with anthranilate or hydroxyanthranilates to form HC-anthranilates (avenanthramides). The enzyme from Dianthus caryophyllus (DcHCBT) exhibits markedly higher activity than its homolog from Avena sativa (AsHCBT) [360].
