PsiK encodes a kinase that catalyzes the phosphorylation of 4-hydroxytryptamine (4-HT) to generate norbaeocystin, constituting a key step in the native psilocybin biosynthetic pathway of Psilocybe mushrooms. The enzyme has been reported to catalyze this phosphorylation efficiently and is therefore not regarded as a rate-limiting component in engineered or artificial biosynthetic pathways [339].
