PAICS encodes a bifunctional enzyme with both phosphoribosylaminoimidazole-succinocarboxamide synthase and phosphoribosylaminoimidazole carboxylase activities. Its heterologous expression from human sources in Escherichia coli increases flux through the purine pathway and inosine monophosphate (IMP) titers, but also results in hypoxanthine accumulation [341].
