hmgr encodes hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGR), a rate-limiting enzyme of the mevalonate pathway that catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate. Because its catalytic activity is subject to feedback regulation, a truncated form of HMGR has been expressed to relieve this regulation and enhance the production of isoprenoid precursors [346].
