GalP is a galactose permease that mediates glucose uptake via an alternative pathway to the phosphoenolpyruvate:sugar phosphotransferase system (PTS), operating independently of phosphoenolpyruvate and ATP [342, 343]. The galP gene is transcriptionally repressed by glucose and induced in the presence of galactose [343]. Accordingly, overexpression of galP in combination with glucokinase (glk) has been employed to replace the PTS, thereby increasing phosphoenolpyruvate availability for aromatic compound biosynthesis [342].
