The csrA gene encodes the carbon storage regulator A (CsrA), a global post-transcriptional regulator that coordinates carbohydrate metabolism in Escherichia coli. CsrA modulates phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) flux by activating pyruvate kinase (pykF) and repressing phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (pckA) and phosphoenolpyruvate synthase (ppsA), thereby controlling key steps of PEP turnover. Consistent with this regulatory role, inactivation of csrA has been reported to enhance the production of aromatic compounds, likely through increased availability of PEP for biosynthetic pathways [342].
